Broadband Acoustic

چکیده
The experimental approach is based upon exploiting both long-range observations of clutter and shortrange, or direct-path observations (seabed scattering and reflection) of the features that give rise to the clutter. Direct path observations offer two significant advantages: a) the uncertainties associated with propagation (through a generally sparsely sampled ocean) are minimized, and b) the measurement geometries are favorable to producing data from which hypotheses about the scattering mechanisms can be directly tested. The theoretical approach for diffuse reverberation was taken and advanced from energy flux methods. This project is part of the Broadband Clutter Initiative Joint Research Project (JRP) including ARL-PSU (USA), DRDC-A (CAN), the NATO Undersea Research Centre (Italy) and NRL-DC (USA).

Backscatter Estimation Using Broadband Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers
Growing interest has developed in acoustic studies about the abundance and distributional patterns of the suspended matter, such as plankton and sediments, that act as sound scatterers for Broadband Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler measurements. Supported by careful calibration procedures, acoustic studies using vertical profiles of echo intensity from moored or vessel-mounted Broadband ADCPs ...
متن کاملRemote Sensing of Temperature and Salinity Microstructure in Rivers and Estuaries Using Broadband Acoustic Scattering Techniques
The long-term goals of this research are to 1) measure and understand high-frequency broadband acoustic scattering in rivers and estuaries characterized by strong temperature and salinity gradients and intermittent, high dissipation rates of turbulent kinetic energy, and 2) use these measurements and understanding to develop a remote sensing tool for quantifying the structure of stratified turb...
متن کاملDesign and measurements of a broadband two-dimensional acoustic lens
We describe the design, fabrication, and measurement of a 2D broadband gradient index acoustic lens in air. The index of refraction is tuned by controlling the dimensions of acoustic metamaterial unit cell inclusions designed through numerical simulations. The lens was fabricated in plastic through rapid prototyping stereolithography, and measurements of the sound field show good agreement with...
متن کاملAerodynamic Noise Computation of the Flow Field around NACA 0012 Airfoil Using Large Eddy Simulation and Acoustic Analogy
The current study presents the results of the aerodynamic noise prediction of the flow field around a NACA 0012 airfoil at a chord-based Reynolds number of 100,000 and at 8.4 degree angle of attack. An incompressible Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence model is applied to obtain the instantaneous turbulent flow field. The noise prediction is performed by the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings (FW-...
متن کاملObservation of low-loss broadband supermode propagation in coupled acoustic waveguide complex
We investigate analytically, numerically, and experimentally the low-loss supermode propagation in a coupled acoustic waveguide complex within a broadband. The waveguide complex is implemented with air channels coupled via an ultrathin metafluid layer. We analytically derive the field distribution of incident sound needed for producing acoustic supermodes, and verify the periodically revival pr...
متن کاملInvestigation of the efficiency of various reactive mufflers by noise reduction and transmission loss analyses
Transmission loss and noise reduction of reactive mufflers are determined by linear acoustic theory and unsteady flow field study, respectively. The effects of extending the inlet tube of the muffler, adding holes to the extension, and the number of holes on both transmission loss and noise reduction are investigated. In noise reduction analysis, the Navier-Stokes equations and k-ε model are us...
